About SALGA
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) is the national voice of local government in South Africa, representing the country’s 257 municipalities. Established in 1996, SALGA operates as an autonomous association with a national office and nine provincial offices across South Africa. SALGA
SALGA is mandated to represent, promote, and protect the interests of local government, support the transformation and development of municipalities, strengthen leadership and institutional capacity, and facilitate cooperation, knowledge sharing, and improved service delivery across the local government sector. SALGA
Through its national and provincial structures, SALGA brings together political and administrative leadership and provides a unified platform through which municipalities can engage on governance, development, infrastructure, municipal finance, sustainability, innovation, and other issues affecting local communities.
History
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) was established in 1996 as the national representative body for local government in South Africa. SALGA represents the country’s 257 municipalities and operates through a national office and nine provincial offices.
Since its establishment, SALGA has played an important role in representing, promoting, and protecting the interests of local government, while supporting municipalities in strengthening governance, institutional capacity, sustainable development, and service delivery.
Vision
SALGA’s vision is to lead innovation through quality and sustainable service delivery to its members, contributing to better services for communities.
Through its national and provincial structures, SALGA seeks to strengthen developmental local government and promote innovative approaches that respond effectively to the evolving needs of municipalities and communities across South Africa.
Mission
SALGA’s mission is to serve as a consultative, informed, credible, and accountable organization representing the interests of local government in South Africa.
SALGA works to strengthen municipalities, promote cooperation and knowledge sharing, support institutional development, and act as a catalyst for improved governance, innovation, sustainable development, and service delivery.
Membership
SALGA represents all 257 municipalities in South Africa, providing a unified national platform for the country’s local government sector.
Its membership brings together metropolitan, district, and local municipalities and enables collaboration among political leaders, municipal administrations, government institutions, and other stakeholders involved in local development.
Through its engagement with IFIA, SALGA also contributes to strengthening connections between local government and the international invention and innovation ecosystem, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, innovative solutions, and international cooperation.
SALGA and the Future of Innovation
SALGA recognizes innovation, technology, and knowledge exchange as important drivers for strengthening local government and improving service delivery across South Africa.
Through its engagement with the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA) and the global innovation community, SALGA aims to create new opportunities for collaboration between municipalities, inventors, innovators, universities, research institutions, industry, entrepreneurs, and international partners.
