Women and IP: Accelerating innovation and creativity

The World Intellectual Property Day Gallery features women from around the world who are forging new horizons with their groundbreaking ideas.

To celebrate this year’s World Intellectual Property Day campaign, IFIA invite all IFIA’s members to nominate a woman or more talented women innovators, creators, entrepreneurs, and/or IP professionals from their country, who are using IP rights, or supporting the use of IP rights, to accelerate innovation and creativity, and whose work is an inspiration for others.

NOTE:

1-To announce the candidates, you can either do it through your country’s intellectual property office or through the official members of WIPO, which is IFIA one of these WIPO’s members.

2-In the nomination form in the submitter’s email section, all IFIA members should include info@ifia.com, so that WIPO can ensure that this is an official nomination from its official partner.

3-You have to send a copy of your nominated documents to the IFIA secretariat by email to info@ifia.com.
Then IFIA will send the confirmation letter to the WIPO that this is an official nomination from our office.

We do not approve nominations that have not already sent her information and documents to the IFIA Secretariat by official IFIA members.

We informed you that the IFIA General Assembly meeting will be held on 5 November 2021 in Nuremberg.
We heard that some of IFIA members can not travel because of Covid-19 disease.

The Seoul International Invention Fair as one of the world’s largest international invention fairs was held by the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) during 1 – 4 December, 2016 under the patronage of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA).

SIIF 2016 showcased a total of 643 pieces of inventions from 31 participating countries like the USA, Germany and China including 176 inventions from 120 local (South Korean) companies. Together with the main exhibition, there will be the International Invention & Business Pavilion which displayed 20 types of inventions from foreign inventors living in South Korea who wish to open up their own business.

IFIA Strategic Planning Senior Adviser

On 23 February 2016, a meeting was arranged between IFIA President, Alireza Rastegar and David Taji having experience as the President of the International Jury of the Geneva Invention Fair, President of the Jury of the International Invention Fair in the Middle East, President of Deban Trading SA, and Administrator of Leaudelair SA to discuss the ways of cooperation.

As it is widely known, planning is an integral and critical component of good management and governance. Planning helps IFIA to stay relevant and responsive to the requirements of its members and contributes to the organizational growth and stability.

Relying on David Taji’s vast experience in the international relations as well as his commitment, he is appointed as Senior Adviser of IFIA Strategic Planning in order to offer his consultation on how to fulfill the desired objectives and visions of IFIA, to identify the obstacles and how to overcome them.

IFIA aims to reach a more efficient result in its activities counting on the advises that Mr. Taji offers to IFIA Strategic Planning team for setting priorities, strengthening its international operations, establishing agreements around intended outcomes/results, and defining the actions needed to make progress.

With the development of relevant strategic plans, IFIA will be able to determine the necessary priorities, procedures, and operations (strategies) to achieve its vision.

IFIA Membership Process

IFIA membership is categorized in three different classes of Full, Corresponding and Collaborating members. You can find detailed description of each one in the related categories. Only one full member can be admitted from each country. However, there is no limitation upon admission of members for other categories.

To start the process of membership, the applicant is required to submit a membership request letter addressed to IFIA President, Mr. Alireza Rastegar and duly fill in the membership request form (in word format) and send both to info[at]ifia.com. Following a sample of membership request letter is provided for your convenience.

Afterwards, your request will be examined in IFIA Executive Committee meeting and you will be informed about the final result. The type of your membership is determined by IFIA Executive Committee members.

IFIA & WIPO International Symposium 1994

IFIA WIPO International symposium 1994 on Inventors, Inventions and Information – April 1994

The sixth International symposium on “Inventors, inventions and information” was jointly organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA) with the cooperation of the European Patent Office in Vienna from April 11 to 14, 1994 at the premises of EPO.

There were 103 participants from 35 countries including the representatives of invention associations, inter-governmental organization, non-governmental organization, universities, innovation centers and patent agents.

The symposium was opened by Mr. Wolfgang Pilch, EPO Director Development, Mr. Vladimir Yossifov, Head of WIPO Development Cooperation Program, and by Mr. Farag Moussa, IFIA President.

Several aspects of the main theme were examined, namely:

Experience of inventors with the use of patent information
Use of patent documents and patent libraries by European inventors
Novelty searches made by inventors themselves

Technology Transfer Working Procedure

Description

IFIA members are authorized to establish IFIA Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) in IFIA member states. TTOs work under the supervision and guidance of Technology Transfer Secretariat (TTS), situated in IFIA Secretariat, to meet the requirements of Technology Transfer Center (TTC). TTC branches supervise the activities of TTOs regionally. IFIA may found TTC branches in specialized fields such as electronics, computer, etc which is possible in case the members working in special areas send IFIA Secretariat a request in this regard. If IFIA has several members in one country, then one of the members can be in charge of TTO upon the approval of Executive Committee members and the remaining members are expected to cooperate with their national TTO.

TTO establishment procedure

Firstly, the applicant sends a request to TTS. After the request is reviewed and approved, a memorandum of understanding, effective within one year of MOU signing, between the TTS and related TTO. The MOU is renewable only if the TTO performs efficient activities.

TTO main activities

One of the primary works of this office is to communicate and network with the national investors, manufacturers, retailers, SMEs and commercialization centers that have the potentiality to produce and commercialize the inventions. Moreover, the TTOs are required to review the request submitted by the applicants to see which ones are ready to be commercialized.

The inventors are responsible for receiving either national or international patent protection (which is feasible by PCT) and inform the TTO and TTC in order to be included in their files.

Requirements

TTO and TTC branches must be well-equipped with the official and administrative facilities and attempt to represent their activities to the related people and organs.

Working Procedure

After identifying the national investors, manufacturers, retailers, SMEs and commercialization centers, TTO and TTC must insert the related data in TTS website in the section that is devoted to their country. Other TTOs as well as the inventors are provided access to this data.

If any investor or commercializing center is interested to sign a contract with the inventor, then TTC informs TTO in this regard and the request will be sent to the inventor. The requests can be made without considering the nationality of inventor or investor. TTO or TTC can act as a consultant while entering into the contract.

Generally this system works free of charge unless one of the parties seeks consultation form TTC or TTO. In such a case, the received amount of money must be reported to TTS.

Annual activity report of TTO and TTC must be submitted to TTS, as well.

About IFIA

During the first International Inventors Conference held on 11 July 1968 in London, the first effective international cooperation between the national inventors’ associations was fostered and the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA) was formed. The representatives of seven inventor associations from Denmark, Finland, West Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland were present in the conference.

For some years, Mr. Harald , Director of the Swedish Inventions Office in collaboration with Mr. Leif Nordstrand collected information and made contacts in other countries and worked quietly away preparing the ground for the formation of an international inventors’ body.

The first Statutes was drafted on 27 June 1968, circulated prior to the conference and approved during the General Assembly meeting.

The first President of the newly established inventors’ federation was elected to be Mr. W.A. Richardson, chairman of the British Institute of Patentees and Inventors. The vice presidents were Dr. F. Burmester (West Germany), S. Green (Great Britain), F. Pfaffli (Switzerland), H. Romanus (Sweden) and the chairman was S. Green (Great Britain). IFIA Secretariat was opened in 207 Abbey House, 2-8 Victoria Street, Westminster, London and Mr. A. L. T. Cotterell, Secretary of the British Association was elected as the Secretary of the Federation.

The council of the Institute of Patentees and Inventors, London, gave a dinner on Thursday, 11 July at the Café Royal, Regent Street, London, to commemorate the inauguration of the new Federation.

The first bulletin was published in September 1968 including a message from the president declaring the objectives of the federation formation. The first international symposium on the situation of inventors was jointly organized by International Federation of Inventors’ Associations and World Intellectual Property Organization from May 21 to 24, 1984 in WIPO headquarters in Geneva.

The Women Network was created in September 1994 with 10 members from Argentina, Canada, Cuba, Finland, Iceland, Japan, Malaysia, Norway, Philippines and Sweden. Nobel Prize winner, Dr Rosalyn Yalow, was an Honorary Member of IFIA-WIN.

The African Network was formed on 12 December 2007 in Niamey, Niger by the representatives of 5 countries namely Benin, Burkina-Faso, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria to develop and promote innovation in Africa.

The first International exposition for women titled “Korea International Women Inventors Exposition” took place in Seoul, Korea in 2008 bringing together over 500 women and SMEs (owned by women) from more than 30 countries to share information and experience, to learn about new technological trends, and to promote their current innovations.

The first international inventor’s day was held on February 2nd, 2008 in Bangkok together with the Inventor’s day in Thailand following the proposal of the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) regarding the “International Inventor’s Day” which was admitted by the majority of executive Committee members.

Today IFIA is a thriving organization of over 140 members representing 100 states from the five continents. IFIA is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland with external offices in Brazil, Korea, Sweden, and Lebanon. IFIA General Assembly meetings are biennially convened to delineate IFIA strategies and policies.

IFIA Executive Committee meetings are biannually organized to explore the situation of inventors, the challenges they face and the practices that IFIA can develop to overcome them.

In a serious attempt to disseminate the culture of invention and innovation, annually almost 40 international invention exhibitions are held to display the innovative achievements of inventors.

IFIA International Congresses are held in IFIA member states to discuss diverse issues in the field of invention and innovation such as the innovation gap among women and how IFIA fills in the gap, IP commercialization and how to gain wealth from the ideas.

IFIA International workshops take place to familiarize the inventors with the patent protection.

IFIA paper magazine, recognized as one of the main publications, is distributed among an extensive network of people promoting the initiatives taken to improve the situation of inventors.

IFIA electronic newsletter is the other publication distributed bimonthly to inform the members and inventors about the invention exhibitions and the new developments for the benefit of inventors.

INST 2015 kicks off a world of innovation & inventions

From long before the invention of the wheel humanity has never stopped inventing! And Taiwan, Province of China may just be the best place to invent and market inventions. Geneva Salon 2016

The International Exhibition of Inventions, the world’s largest event of its type, took place from the 13th to the 17th April. It was held under the patronage of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), of the Swiss government and the State and City of Geneva and hosted to 695 exhibitors from 40 countries.

Absolutely new inventions were presented for the first time by inventors, companies, universities and State organizations. They represented all areas of human activity, whether it be a practical every day object or a very high tech product.

They delighted the public because of their originality and will also interest industrialists, investors, distributors and financiers because of their ingenuity.

International Jury of 85 experts awarded many highly regarded prizes to the best inventions. The Grand Prix guarantee instant recognition to its winner.

The Grand Prix of the 44^th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva was awarded to an exhibitor from The Hong Kong Baptist University, Professor Kok-Wai Cheah, from the company Cathay Photonics, for his process to reinforce glass surfaces by applying a thin layer of sapphire to the screen which needs to be protected.

This method can be used in many different areas, but especially for smartphone screens which are vulnerable and are often scratched or broken. But all kinds of glass surfaces can be treated even rounded ones as in watches or TVs. The method consists in applying a thin layer of sapphire – one of the hardest materials in existence – onto the glass or quartz surface at a high temperature. 8.5 microns are enough to guarantee excellent protection comparable to that of a block of sapphire. Applying it does not diminish transparency, since optical transmission of the film is very near to that of glass, between 89% and 92%.

The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva also rewarded 45 other especially deserving inventions among the 1’000 presented.
