As IFIA President Alireza Rastegar has often emphasized, promoting inventive spirit is fundamental to sustainable development a vision both institutions are strongly committed to realizing.

The BRICS Standardization Forums aim to harmonize industrial and educational standards among member countries to accelerate sustainable socioeconomic development. Mr. Marcelo Vivacqua, Founder and President of ABIPIR and Brazilian representative of the BRICS Academy, actively participated in these forums, which addressed critical topics such as the standardization of industrial technical norms, vocational education curricula, and regulations governing technological competitions. Areas of focus included additive manufacturing and Building Information Modeling (BIM), among others.

The forums brought together distinguished participants from various countries, including Mr. Liu Zenying, President of the BRICS Academy. Notably, contributions were made by Brazilian additive manufacturing expert Professor Américo Scotti and specialist Ms. Cristiane Evelise Ribeiro da Silva, who shared her insights via a recorded message. Representatives from China, India, Russia, and Indonesia also enriched the discussions with their perspectives and expertise.

Suchita Srinivasan, a standout at the 2024 U.S. National Innovator Challenge, is the brilliant mind behind Cura: A Torticollis Head Tilt Device, an innovative solution to a widespread medical condition. This invention comprises a hardware device paired with an iOS and Android mobile application, designed to aid individuals suffering from Torticollis, a condition that causes the neck to contract and the head to tilt to one side. According to NCBI, Torticollis affects one in 250 newborns, with 90% of the population experiencing at least one episode during their lifetime.

The hardware device, shaped like an earpiece, integrates cutting-edge technology, including an MPU6050 gyroscope, a vibration motor, and a button. It monitors the user’s head tilt and alerts them with vibrations if their head deviates beyond a predefined angle. 

The companion mobile app stores user accounts and tracks daily progress, providing valuable insights for patients and medical professionals alike.

Technologies Used in Cura:

• Arduino: Programming the hardware device.
• Firebase: Storing and authenticating user information.
• Flutter: Developing the mobile app.
• Bluetooth: Connecting the hardware device with the app.

Cura addresses the challenges of current treatment options, such as physical therapy, which is limited in duration, and neck braces, which are often bulky and uncomfortable. By offering a discreet, user-friendly solution, Cura provides continuous support throughout the day, making it a game-changer for those affected by Torticollis and similar conditions, including multiple sclerosis.

Suchita’s inspiration for Cura stems from her personal experience with Torticollis. Having faced the limitations of existing treatments firsthand, she recognized the need for a more effective and convenient solution. She recalls wishing for a product that could offer discreet, ongoing assistance. Her determination to fill this gap led her to develop Cura.

After two prototype iterations, Suchita achieved significant improvements. The second prototype simplified the design, reducing Bluetooth communication complexities and cutting production costs from $58.91 to $36.59. Testing the device herself, she experienced firsthand how Cura consistently reminded her to maintain proper posture, improving her condition significantly.

Suchita has ambitious plans for Cura’s future, including:

• Adding new features, such as enhanced communication between the app and device and facial recognition capabilities.
• Securing a patent and FDA approval.
• Selling the product online and through pharmacies.
• Collaborating with medical professionals for clinical trials and feedback.
• Partnering with manufacturing companies to bring Cura to market.

Suchita’s journey has taught her invaluable lessons about perseverance and resilience:

“If there is one thing I’ve learned throughout the inventing process, my high school journey, and generally the last 16 years of my life, it’s that failure is not the end.”

She reflects on her younger self, who would feel devastated when outcomes didn’t meet her expectations. Over time, she realized that every opportunity, regardless of the result, provides skills and knowledge that contribute to future success.

“So, maybe you didn’t win that award, get the best grade, or beat the opposing team. And that’s okay. Just keep working hard, keep putting in time and effort into the activities you love, and keep being driven. Even if the outcome isn’t what you wanted, get back on your feet and keep going. As Helen Keller once said, ‘A bend in the road is not the end of the road, unless you fail to make the turn.’”

Suchita’s journey exemplifies how personal challenges can fuel innovative solutions. With the support of mentors, medical experts, and the STEM community, she is determined to make Cura a transformative tool for those in need.

The Silicon Valley Invention Festival (SVIIF), America’s largest innovation exposition, was a remarkable stage for two young Global Innovation Field Trip presenters, Nicole Haragutchi and Ali Humaid Alloghani, who showcased their exceptional talent and groundbreaking ideas.
Nicole’s invention, the Wildfire Alarm System, equipped with a provisional patent, earned her the prestigious Golden Globe Award alongside three other honors. This was Nicole’s first patented innovation, making the recognition even more rewarding. Reflecting on her achievement, she expressed immense pride in contributing positively to our civilization and the planet.
Ali, on the other hand, wowed the judges with his innovative Dr. Robot, winning the Gold Medal Award along with multiple other accolades. His diverse innovations, all aimed at serving society, made a lasting impression on the audience. Ali described his participation in SVIIF 2024 as a dream come true, a testament to the boundless opportunities for young inventors.

Both Nicole and Ali were the youngest participants in this year’s exhibition, a distinction that was celebrated by Alireza Rastegar, President of IFIA, and other notable dignitaries from the event, industry, and local community.

Michela Messina is a 7th grader from Fairfield, CT. She invented the Pitching Pro, a patent-pending invention, which upgrades a regular softball pitching rubber with a self-retracting string to act as a measuring tape to set the perfect distance. The device includes a torsion spring inside a 3D printed base that pulls the string back when you pull it out. In its latest version, she has made the retraction mechanism removable with different covers so that it can be customized for multiple sports. For Michela, the most challenging part was trying to make the mound thinner and sturdier. It took 5 tries to get all the strings to fit in the 3D printed base.

 

She believes that pitchers that are trying to practice or warm up before a game or scrimmage with no set distance (like the outfield) would benefit from her invention. It can also be used anytime someone is practicing some place without a mound. She hopes that in the future that the device can be mass-manufactured and used for other sports. Michela is an avid softball player, where she pitches for her travel team and local Little League All Star team. She found inspiration for her invention while pitching in the outfield without a proper bullpen and came to the realization that other pitchers would benefit from a solution to this issue. The event aims to enrich cooperation between vocational institutions and enterprises and promote high-quality vocational education among BRICS plus countries.
