How can Indigenous innovators in the US and Canada build upon traditional knowledge and technology to meet the social, environmental, and economic goals of their communities?

Challenge Overview

Indigenous innovation is as diverse and expansive as Indigenous communities, with entrepreneurs harnessing traditional knowledge systems, values, and teachings to reimagine and renew what is possible in their communities and beyond. The Tohono O’odham Nation, a sovereign tribe with the landmass of Connecticut, has recently deployed affordable wireless internet service across its citizens. In Canada, the Sanyakola Foundation is working directly with First Nations and Métis elders to develop language revitalization technologies for dying or presumed extinct Indigenous languages. Indigenous innovators across the US and Canada are committed to creating bright and prosperous futures for all. 

Solve continues to hear from Indigenous leaders about the essential role culture and traditional knowledge systems must play in any business, nonprofit, or social enterprise designed by and for their communities. Moreover, there is an ever-increasing callfrom Indigenous peoples to generate, modify, and control their own technologies for the sake of their communities. Whether working with data banks, financial institutions, agriculture, energy, and more, the time is past due for local control of the services and technologies serving Indigenous peoples. 

MIT Solve seeks exceptional innovators supporting community-based solutions by and for Indigenous communities across the United States and Canada. While we are excited to select and support innovators with any focal area, we have a particular interest for 2024 in solutions that: 

  • Strengthen sustainable energy sovereignty and support climate resilience initiatives by and for Indigenous peoples.
  • Drive positive outcomes for Indigenous learners of any age and context through culturally grounded educational opportunities.
  • Promote culturally informed mental and physical health and wellness services for Indigenous community members.
  • Advance community-driven digital sovereignty initiatives in Indigenous communities, including the ethical use of AI, machine learning, and data technologies.

  • Adapt cities to more extreme weather, including through climate-smart buildings, incorporating climate risk in infrastructure planning, and restoring regional ecosystems.
  • Enable a low-carbon and nutritious global food system, across large and small-scale producers plus supply chains that reduce food loss.
  • Strengthen coastal and marine ecosystems and communities through the broader blue economy, including fisheries, clean energy, and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV).

Do you want to solve an urgent social issue created by COVID-19?
Apply for a Booz Allen Foundation Innovation Grant and make the change that counts.

The Booz Allen Foundation has established a $1 million Innovation Fund to help nonprofits, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, innovators at colleges and universities, and startups and small businesses harness the power of data, technology, and diverse intellectual capital to improve COVID-19 relief efforts and make a difference. We want to surface the most innovative solutions and empower the individuals and organizations behind those solutions to drive their development and implementation.

The Foundation is accepting applications from April 30 through June 5, 2020. Nonprofits can apply for grants of up to $100,000. Individuals, teams of individuals, and eligible for-profit organizations can apply for microgrants of up to $10,000. Certain eligibility requirements apply. Through the Innovation Fund, the Foundation is specifically targeting solutions and projects that will build lasting community resilience by protecting vulnerable populations and frontline workers or providing for a safe return to work.

Introduction challenge:

The themes for 2020 are Urban Food Production, Circular Packaging, and Decarbonisation.

Urban Food Production
Urban farming represents an opportunity to improve food security in cities and minimise agriculture-related emissions—but still consumes a large number of resources today. We’re looking for technological solutions that will deliver a breakthrough in sustainable urban food production.

Circular Packaging
We’re looking for innovative packaging solutions to replace or reduce packaging waste made from plastic, glass, virgin/hard-to-recycle paper, or aluminum. These solutions should be useful in the retail, fashion, beauty, logistics, and food & beverage industries.

Decarbonisation
We’re looking for solutions that will enable cities to capture and use carbon in a productive, sustainable way. Key considerations include how long CO2 captured can be sequestered and kept out of the air.​ We’re also searching for game-changing, disruptive new solutions to decarbonise traditional sectors and processes in industries such as logistics, mobility and more.

 

Submitted solutions should:
  • Enable the large-scale capture of atmospheric CO2​
  • Effectively capture, store or convert CO2 using little energy and space​
  • Turn captured CO2 into a viable product stream​
  • Be carbon negative in the overall life cycle​
  • Take a systems approach to carbon capture and storage/utilisation​
  • Demonstrate demand for outputs produced​

Submitted solutions should:
  • Drastically reduce the resources that go into packaging
  • Enable manufacturers/producers to do away with packaging altogether
  • Equal the performance of conventional, unsustainable packaging and be cost competitive
  • Be closed-loop: Either compostable, recyclable or bio-degradable
  • Make use of renewable feedstock. The solution should consider the availability and sustainability of feedstock
Submitted solutions should:
  • Produce novel food or alternative proteins
  • Considerably improve nutritional quality of food over current methods of production
  • Enable certain species of crops/livestock to be farmed in cities for the first time
  • Reduce resource and input requirements (eg energy, water land use) for production

Our mission capabilities will rapidly increase when useful products can be created from in-situ resources.

The ability to prospect, map, and characterize these in-situ resources not only increases NASA’s progress towards a sustained presence on the moon, but also could revolutionize mining, purification systems, the pharmaceutical industry, and other commercial industries – much as we realized enormous technological benefits and advances from the Apollo Program. NASA has issued this challenge to the global community to develop miniaturized payloads that can be sent to the moon in the next 1-4 years and bridge lunar strategic knowledge gaps.

Payloads that support prospecting for resources that help support a sustained human presence are highly desirable, in addition to payloads that enable lunar science, demonstrate new technologies and/or advance the use of resources found on the moon (in-situ resource utilization, ISRU).

Imagine a rover the size of your Roomba® crawling the moon’s surface. These small rovers developed by NASA and commercial partners provide greater mission flexibility and allow NASA to collect key information about the lunar surface. However, existing science payloads are too big, too heavy, and require too much power for these rovers and new, miniaturized payload designs are needed. Payloads need to be similar in size to a new bar of soap to fit cleanly inside the rover (maximum external dimensions: 100mm x 100mm x 50mm).

This ideation challenge will award $160,000 total in prizes across two categories. This ideation challenge is expected to be followed by new challenges to prototype, test, and deliver these miniaturized payloads. This larger effort will generate a maturation pipeline of next-generation instruments, sensors, and experiments that can be used for lunar exploration over the next few years.

The Dubai International Best Practices Award for Sustainable Development aims to recognize global innovative practices that have made a positive impact and continue to improve the quality of people’s life leading to the cities of the future.

Award History

Established in 1995—under the directive of the late Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum during the United Nations International Conference in Dubai—as an outcome of the Dubai Declaration. This declaration created the international concept of sharing Best Practices for the accelerated development of the human settlements sector.

The Dubai International Best Practices Award for Sustainable Development has continued to receive support from H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality.

On International Women’s Day, UNESCO launched the call for nominations for the 2020 UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education. The Prize awards US$ 50,000 annually to two laureates making outstanding efforts in favor of girls’ and women’s education.

Who?

Governments of the UNESCO Member States and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in official partnership with UNESCO are now invited to nominate up to three individuals, institutions or organizations who have made strong, innovative contributions in favor of girls’ and women’s education.
Interested candidates are invited to contact their country’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, or an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO for more information.

What?

Nominations must meet the eligibility and selection criteria set by the Prize. Nominated projects must be established and running for at least two years, show potential to be replicable and scalable, and contribute to one or more of the priority areas of the Prize. An independent International Jury of five experts will assess nominations on the basis of the project’s potential for impact, innovation, and sustainability.

When?

The deadline for submissions is 26 May 2020 (midnight, Paris time).

How?

Nominations must be submitted in English or French via an online platform, accessible only to Permanent Delegations to UNESCO and NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO.

Based on the recommendations of the Jury, the Director-General of UNESCO will announce the 2020 laureates who will receive the award at an official ceremony on 11 October 2020 as part of the International Day of the Girl Child celebrations.

Established in 2015 and funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Prize honors outstanding and innovative practices advancing girls’ and women’s education. It consists of two US $50,000 awards to help further the work of laureates in this field.

Today, humanity is facing a world crisis due to the spread of the Coronavirus and this is a historical conjuncture where each one of us must try to find solutions depending on their field and skills. In this exceptional period, many inventors are inventing new technologies and inventions related to COVID-19 and this can be seen very clearly in many countries.

So, to honor those individual inventors, innovative companies, universities, and scientific research centers, who found concrete solutions to fight against the spread of COVID-19, IFIA organized the “Inventions VS Corona” contest against this virus.

It is a valuable point to know that participation in this competition is free and the winners will receive multiple awards. Besides, projects will receive the necessary support to reach the global market through the worldwide network of IFIA.

Furthermore, since IFIA is the only international organization that has officially received a grant of special consultative regarding the support of innovation, inventors, and innovators from the United Nations, the inventors will benefit from the support and funds related to the Coronavirus during this competition.

In conclusion, IFIA invites inventors, innovators, and researchers from all over the world to engage and to have impressive participation in this online contest.

On Thursday, 7 December 2017, IFIA and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong’s leading trade promotion agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote intellectual property trade between IFIA member states and Hong Kong.

The objective of this bilateral partnership is to leverage Hong Kong’s strategic regional position as the international gateway for Chinese mainland companies and an intellectual property trading hub. IFIA’s resources and knowledge is used to expand and promote technology transfer on a global scale, to help companies from Hong Kong and the mainland to look for IFIA member states’ licensable intellectual property.

Upon the establishment of mutual collaboration, the HKTDC and IFIA intend to engage in extensive information exchange to keep informed of the latest development of the intellectual property industry of their respective regions. Furthermore, both parties intend to mutually promote the Asia IP Exchange maintained by the HKTDC.
